THE LONDON BOOK FAIR!
Next week Publishers Inc. will be represented at The London Book Fair, at the Publishing Scotland stand H350. The printed edition of last year’s Publishers Inc. will be distributed together with a flyer about our upcoming digital app, as this is the first year the magazine has been produced digitally.
Our current challenge is to optimise the navigation in the app. After a couple of tests and constructive feedback from industry professionals visiting us during the last few weeks, we learned that navigation and the handling of the app is crucial. You should never assume that readers will find their way through the app or have that natural intuition and try to scroll or enlarge objects. Things need to be clearly identified, so we are now considering redesigning our icons into actual objects which tell you what to do. We found some good examples in the Picture House and Vice apps.
This week’s guest lecture was held by Tim Danton from Dennis Publishing. Dennis Publishing is famous for Maxim and The Week as well as a great number of other magazines in the areas of Lifestyle, Motoring and Technology. Tim told us about his experiences in creating digital issues of The Week, Evo, and Computer Shopper which were all developed in different directions when the iPad was launched in 2010.
At the end of the lecture he identified key issues which have to be considered when working in the magazine publishing industry:
- Treat every brand differently
- Think about readers and advertisers
- Keep up with trends!
- Keep up with technology!
- Always challenge the status quo!
- Don’t sit on your hands: do!
- Content used to be king, but now it’s at least as important as the technology, which enables a great reading experience
